Arizona 2006

Took a wonderful trip to Arizona beginning in January.  First there was the gathering in Quartzsite hosted by the Arizona chapter of RVW.   Then it was off to Apache Junction and Southern Arizona for some birding before going home via Anza Borrego and the Salton Sea.

Stayed at the KOA in Apache Junction January 27-29.  Did laundry and got the RV ready for another round of boondocking.  Took a trip into Phoenix to visit the Heard Museum and it's displays of Native American cultures and art.  Then it was off to Lost Dutchman State Park to see the birds and wildlife.

At sunset the coyotes would begin to howl.  They seemed to be everywhere.   Sometimes they would start with a howl, then get going yipping, yapping and whining as though their own sounds made them want to howl more.  I loved it.

Stayed in the campground at Patagonia Lake State Park February 1-4, 2006.  This is birding heaven.  Took a walk along the Sonoita Creek from the campground loop.  There were birds everywhere.  The next day I birded the Nature Conservancy's preserve in Patagonia and then visited the Patton's with their wonderful bird feeders.

The quest to see the Elegant Trogon was probably one of the main reasons I came to Patagonia.

There was a Violet-crowned Hummingbird that visited the feeders at Patton's

but he had to share the hummingbird feeder with this Gila Woodpecker
